Cylinder Head Skimming – From £50 + VAT
Cylinder head skimming, also known as resurfacing or fly cutting, involves removing a controlled amount of material from the cylinder head’s mating surface to restore a smooth, flat finish.
This is particularly important following head gasket failure, engine overheating or corrosion damage.
We always recommend having a cylinder head skimmed once it has been removed from the engine, provided it is suitable for machining.
Even minor distortion can prevent a new head gasket from sealing correctly. Considering the labour and expense involved in replacing a cylinder head gasket and associated components, skimming is a relatively inexpensive precaution against having to repeat the repair.
Our prices start at just £50 + VAT for a standard flat-faced, four-cylinder aluminium cylinder head.

Fast Turnaround & While-You-Wait Service
We understand the importance of getting vehicles back on the road quickly, particularly for garages and professional mechanics.
Our typical machining times are:
- Aluminium cylinder heads: Approximately 30–40 minutes
- Cast iron cylinder heads: Approximately 90 minutes
Cast iron heads require slower cutting speeds, resulting in a longer machining process.
We offer a convenient while-you-wait service by prior appointment, and same-day turnaround is usually available for straightforward jobs, subject to workload and the condition of the cylinder head.
Cylinder Head Welding & Associated Repairs
Alongside cylinder head skimming, Roberts Fabrications offers a range of associated machining and repair services, including:

Where possible, badly corroded aluminium cylinder heads can be repaired by welding damaged areas before resurfacing.
All repair work is assessed individually, with quotations provided according to the extent of the damage.
Please note that we do not carry out valve, valve seat or valve guide repairs, engine rebores or cylinder head pressure testing. However, we may be able to recommend specialist companies offering these services.
What Cylinder Heads Can We Skim?
Our milling equipment can accommodate most aluminium and cast iron cylinder heads with maximum face dimensions of approximately:
- 500mm long
- 250mm wide
Some specialist cylinder heads, particularly certain diesel heads containing hardened steel inserts, may not be suitable for conventional fly cutting.
All camshafts must be removed before machining. Valves can generally remain fitted provided they are fully closed and do not protrude beyond the cylinder head’s mating surface.

Collection and return within five miles of our South Godstone workshop starts from £20 + VAT per order, with a typical 24-hour turnaround, subject to availability.
